Outcome of the Gene Technology Ministers’ Meeting – July 2021

The Gene Technology Ministers’ Meeting (GTMM) met virtually on Tuesday 20 July 2021. They discussed the progress of implementing the recommendations of the third review of the National Gene Technology Scheme and endorsed an updated review implementation plan.

The Gene Technology Ministers’ Meeting (GTMM) met online on Tuesday 20 July 2021. The GTMM, chaired by Senator the Hon. Richard Colbeck, is comprised of ministers with responsibility for gene technology from all Australian governments.

Key meeting outcomes:

  • The GTMM considered and endorsed a Decision Regulation Impact Statement. This statement outlined the preferred regulatory framework for updating and enhancing operation of the scheme.
  • The GTMM agreed to several updates to the existing action plan for implementing the recommendations of the third review. Read the updated implementation action plan.
  • Ministers agreed that gene drives, a new and emerging technology, require a clear policy framework to guide any potential applications in Australia.
