Outcome of the Gene Technology Ministers’ Meeting – 13 April 2023

The Gene Technology Ministers’ Meeting (GTMM) met virtually on Thursday 13 April 2023. They discussed the achievements and progress of implementing the recommendations of the Third Review of the National Gene Technology Scheme and endorsed a new Action Plan.

The Gene Technology Ministers’ Meeting (GTMM) met via video conference on Thursday 13 April 2023. The GTMM, chaired by the Hon. Ged Kearney MP, is comprised of ministers with responsibility for gene technology from all Australian governments.

Key meeting outcomes:

  • Ministers' acknowledged factors impacting on delivery of the new gene technology legislation by 2023, and agreed to revised timeframes for implementation.
  • Ministers’ noted the continuing development on a draft National Gene Drive Policy Guide to provide clarity to proponents and information on their regulatory obligations in Australia.
  • Ministers’ endorsed a new GTMM Action Plan 2023-25 focussed on five key priorities for the Scheme.
  • The GTMM agreed to defer the next review of the Scheme until 2025 to enable legislative reforms arising from the Third Review to be implemented.
